For the Aspire alumni community in Nairobi, coming together isn’t just about reunion, it’s about reimagining Africa’s future through knowledge, connection, and bold ideas.

This June, the University of Nairobi played host to the Aspire Nairobi Alumni Gathering, a vibrant convening that brought together 85 participants for an evening of dialogue, discovery, and deep reflection. At the heart of the event? A powerful conversation on startups in Africa, and the people and institutions driving the continent’s next wave of transformation.

Expert Voices, Local Relevance

The evening featured two globally renowned thought leaders whose insights left a lasting impression.

Professor Emanuelle Colonnelli of the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, an expert in entrepreneurship, venture capital, and development finance, joined Professor Emily Breza of Harvard University, known for her work in development economics, household finance, and social networks.

Together, they led a compelling discussion on the intersecting forces shaping Africa’s entrepreneurial landscape, from the importance of microfinance and inclusive capital to the structural role of institutions in enabling growth in emerging markets.

Their insights were not only grounded in rigorous research but tailored to the real-world challenges (and opportunities) facing Aspire alumni across the continent.

A Gathering Rooted in Community

Beyond the keynote talks, the event wove together elements of reflection and connection. A Community Wall Activity invited participants to share their visions for the future of African innovation, while Speed Networking sessions fostered new bonds and sparked collaborations among changemakers from diverse sectors.

The energy peaked during a vibrant Q&A session, where alumni engaged directly with the speakers, bridging academic ideas with entrepreneurial realities on the ground.

Feedback That Fuels the Future

If the testimonials are anything to go by, the Nairobi event hit all the right notes. Alumni praised the format, the speakers, and the sense of shared purpose. Many voiced their desire for more gatherings that mix learning with action, including suggestions for team-building retreats, community outreach projects, leadership summits, group discussions, and masterclasses on investment literacy.

As one participant summed it up: “We didn’t just talk about change, we started building it.”

From Nairobi to the rest of the continent, Aspire alumni are proving that when ideas meet intention, the possibilities are limitless.
