Janiele Santos, a recent Biology graduate and member of the 2025 Aspire Leaders Program cohort, has been building a journey marked by research, leadership, and social impact. Originally from Amapá, Brazil, she was recently accepted into the Centelha Program with her project “Intelligent Amazon,” an initiative that uses territorial geotechnology and artificial intelligence to develop solutions tailored to the realities of the Amazon region.

During her undergraduate studies, Janiele received two awards at the Amapá Scientific Initiation Congress in the fields of Biological Sciences and Exact Sciences. She also completed internships at Embrapa and at the Institute for Scientific and Technological Research of the State of Amapá (IEPA).

Along her journey, she was also honored by the State Legislative Assembly with a Motion of Applause in recognition of her youth leadership and involvement in impact-driven initiatives.

It was during this period that Janiele discovered the Aspire Leaders Program through friends. Motivated by the opportunity to develop her leadership skills, broaden her worldview, and strengthen global connections, she decided to join the 2025 cohort.

“The program has an incredible global network, cultural exchange opportunities, and English language development. That motivated me to go even further within Aspire,” she shares.

Throughout the program, Janiele found not only academic and professional growth, but also a new perspective on leadership and purpose.

“I learned that there are different kinds of leaders, and that the inspiration that moves us is not about being unshakable, but about continuing forward and pursuing what we believe in. That showed me I don’t need to be invincible to build something meaningful,” she says.

The idea for “Intelligent Amazon” first emerged during her second undergraduate research project, but it truly took shape during Aspire’s final challenge, which encourages participants to create solutions for their communities.

“The project only became fully developed during the program’s final challenge. That was when I refined the idea by thinking about my region and discussing possibilities with friends,” she explains.

“Intelligent Amazon” works as a territorial technology solution focused on environmental monitoring adapted to the Amazonian reality. The initiative seeks to address challenges such as low connectivity, high operational costs, and the limited accuracy of international tools used in dense forest areas with heavy cloud coverage.

The project aims to strengthen communities, researchers, and organizations working directly in environmental protection across the region, while also democratizing access to technology through more accessible, efficient, and locally aligned solutions.

The relevance of the proposal led to Janiele’s acceptance into the Centelha Program, a national Brazilian initiative that supports innovative entrepreneurship by providing training, mentorship, and financial resources to transform ideas into impactful businesses.

“As a biologist, this acceptance represents confirmation that I am moving in the right direction. It validates not only the technical and scientific knowledge I have gained, but also the experiences built within my own territory,” she shares.

According to Janiele, Aspire played an important role in this achievement by expanding her perspective on leadership, innovation, and social impact:

“Aspire contributed significantly because it broadened my worldview through cultural connections, discussions, and challenges that encouraged me to think beyond the conventional and create solutions focused on my community.”

After completing the program, new opportunities began to emerge in her journey. Today, Janiele serves as a leader of a national grassroots social movement, is part of the Youth Working Group of Brazil’s Environmental Parliamentary Front, and participates in discussions related to environmental advocacy and youth leadership. She has also attended national student congresses and accessed opportunities connected to courses, exchange programs, and professional development.

Reflecting on her path, Janiele emphasizes that impactful projects can emerge from ordinary people who believe in the power of their ideas:

“Great ideas are also born from ordinary people. We do not need to be perfect or the smartest in the room. But we do need to look toward the future and see in ourselves the ability to create and lead projects that generate positive impact for our generation and the next ones to come.”
