An Aspire Foundry is a locally-led, in-country team that serves as the operational engine for Aspire’s presence in a region. Foundries currently exist in six countries — India, Pakistan, Brazil, Bolivia, Türkiye, and Mexico — and each one recruits and supports local students, builds relationships with universities, employers, and civil society organizations, engages the local alumni community, and connects graduates to employment, entrepreneurship, and leadership opportunities. The Foundry model is what transforms Aspire from a global online program into a locally-rooted one.

Africa is one of Aspire Institute’s highest-demand regions and is home to a dynamic network of Aspire Leaders Program alumni who are driving meaningful impact in their communities. For years, Aspire has sought to establish an on-the-ground presence in Africa, something that had not been possible until now.

In August 2026, Aspire will launch its seventh Foundry — and the first on the continent of Africa — in South Africa, a country which combines a large and highly engaged population of first-generation, limited-income students with a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem, strong business infrastructure, and deep networks spanning higher education, civil society, and the private sector. As a gateway to the broader Southern and sub-Saharan African region, South Africa offers a strategic base for expanding Aspire’s reach across the continent.

The South Africa Foundry launch is made possible through Aspire’s partnership with Legends Barber Corporation, one of South Africa’s leading barbershop franchises. Founded by Sheldon Tatchell, Legends began as a modest roadside and sidewalk operation and has grown into a thriving enterprise with more than 80 locations across several African countries. Its commitment to entrepreneurship, youth development, and community empowerment makes it an ideal partner for this next chapter of Aspire’s work.

Through our combined efforts, we hope to better nurture young talent in South Africa and create pathways to economic mobility for local underserved youth.

Legendary Beginnings

Legends Barber Corporation was founded on the values of resilience, humility, and service. Its founder, Sheldon Tatchell, grew up in Eldorado Park, Johannesburg, where childhood hardship and limited opportunities shaped both his character and his ambition.

“Looking back, I believe my greatest lessons didn’t come from business school — they came from adversity,” Tatchell said. “They taught me perseverance, compassion, and the conviction that where you start in life doesn’t have to determine where you finish.”

In 2014, Tatchell launched Legends Barber with just R30,000 in savings and a bold vision: to build a business that would create opportunities through entrepreneurship, employment, and community transformation. What began as a simple act of service — providing haircuts to elderly members of his community — quickly evolved into one of Africa’s leading barbershop franchises.

Today, with more than 80 locations across multiple countries, Legends continues to pair commercial success with social impact through initiatives like its #LegendsGiveBack movement, which is redefining what a barbershop can mean to the communities it serves.

“A large part of my work today is investing in people — whether that’s mentoring entrepreneurs, supporting franchisees, developing our leadership team, or creating pathways for unemployed youth through our training initiatives,” Tatchell said.

Supporting Emerging Leaders in South Africa

Tatchell first connected with Aspire after learning about the organization through the Harvard Business School Owner/President Management Program.

“What impressed me most about Aspire is that it removes barriers,” he said. “It makes world-class learning accessible to people who may never otherwise have had that opportunity.”

That commitment to expanding opportunity is what makes the partnership between Legends Barber Corporation and Aspire Institute such a natural fit. Both organizations share a belief that talent is universal, but access to opportunity is not. By partnering to establish Aspire’s first Foundry in South Africa, Legends Barber and Aspire will create new pathways for young people to develop the leadership, entrepreneurial, and professional skills needed to shape the future of their communities and the continent.

“I hope it inspires more young people to believe that they can build businesses, create employment, and lead meaningful change in their communities. More importantly, I hope it encourages collaboration across sectors, because no single organization can solve Africa’s challenges alone,” Tatchell said. “When we invest in people, we don’t just change individual lives — we strengthen families, businesses, and entire communities.”
